It was a complete transformation. The McArthur wrestlers went from a being a team with no experience to a team who won a District Championship title for the first time in 24 years.
“This is the result of four years of building wrestlers. None of these wrestlers had any experience before coming to McA,” Coach Joseph Murphy said.
Even though they were down three wrestlers due to injury, ten out of thirteen athletes qualified for regionals. Ramiro Mosquera, Carlos Sorondo, Maxwell Dorsey, Dervens Marseillle, and Nick Rosado all placed second, while Andru-Jae Khan, Nelson Chua, Jason Vargas, and Hansky Paillant placed third.
“I’m satisfied with the results and I’m proud to be a part of the team,” Nelson said.
Jaxon Dorsey came in fourth place, his performance along with Jason, helped the team qualify for regionals.
All ten wrestlers made it to the final round by pin fall, which increased their district scores.
“They were successful because they trained hard and pushed each other more in practice,” Murphy said.
“They wrestled well throughout the season. They deserve this,” Coach Mike Zarra said.
